A student from National Taiwan University (NTU) College of Medicine visited our Center

On August 24, a student from the College of Medicine at NTU visited our Center, accompanied by a sixth-year medical student from FMU who had previously participated in a short-term exchange program at NTU.

During their visit, Specially Appointed Professor IRISAWA, Director of the Office of Public Communications and International Cooperation, gave the students an overview of the Fukushima Health Management Survey. They then met with Professor YASUMURA, Executive Director of our Center, for a discussion on Fukushima’s experience following the nuclear accident.

The students and faculty exchanged views on the challenges of conducting a large-scale health survey involving approximately two million residents of Fukushima Prefecture at the time of the nuclear accident, as well as the importance of long-term health monitoring and support following a complex disaster.

The students were also encouraged to “come to Fukushima,” “learn about Fukushima,” and “share with others” what they saw and felt during their visit, 15 years after the Great East Japan Earthquake and nuclear accident.

They also received an explanation of the Thyroid Ultrasound Examination from Professor SHIMURA, Vice Director of the Center, and observed the overall examination process, including a simulated examination.

The visit provided the students with a valuable opportunity to deepen exchanges between the two universities while learning about the Center’s activities and gaining a better understanding of the relationship between disasters and health, as well as the importance of providing long-term health support to local communities.
